This exercise builds and reinforces the skill of subitizing, the ability to quickly and accurately recognize the number of objects in a small group. Young children are able to utilize perceptual subitizing to recognize sets of up to four or five objects. They then can develop conceptual subitizing to recognize larger groups as composites of parts to make the whole.
